Deviations from these standard patterns can pose an obstacle to clear, powerful communication.Lets take a look at three of the most common, power-sapping pitch mistakes you can make - and some simple ways to change them1. UpspeakYoure undoubtedly familiar with upspeak, a pitch pattern that makes statements sound like questions. In upspeak, a speaker ends a statement on a higher pitch, as if they were asking a question instead of making a declaration.Youve probably heard this pattern so often that you may not notice it anymora - even in yourself. Heres how it soundsI was on my way to a meeting? And I was walking past the break room? And then Eric asked me how to work the new coffeemaker? So I showed him as htte nicht viel gefehlt as I could? And then I was late for the meeting and my manager gave me the evil eye? But it wasnt my fault? UnbelievableMy theory about a rising pitch at the end of a statement is that its actually a bit of shorthand. Then, we look for some kind of signal that, yes, the listener is on board and agrees. This way, we dont have to stopa story to ask for and receive this verification.Unfortunately, this habit can easily become a dominant speech pattern, and it runs counter to the powerful, self-assured image you want to convey. In fact, it practically screams self-doubt.When you make a statement that sounds like a question, you send the message that youre unsure of yourself. You dont know if youre making sense,and you doubt whether youll be understood. If you use upspeak in a business meeting or when making a presentation, youll definitely sound like you dont know what youre talking about.Bottom line Make your statements sound like statements rather than questions. Bring your pitch down at the end of your sentences, or keep the pitch even if youre making a request. Go up in pitch only if youre truly asking a question.2. ShriekingThe highest sortiment of y our vocal tone can be off-putting and downright irritating. Image MITMing Guo, assistant professor of mechanical enginee ring at MIT, and his team faced the challenge partly by using the Stokes-Einstein equation, created by Albert Einstein.During my PhD, I was looking at the dynamics of a cell when a system is under cell equilibrium, Guo explains. There are a lot of classic diffusion laws that have principles explained by Einstein.However, what about cells not under thermal equilibrium? Long-term research followed, which led to tweaking the equation to measure movement caused by physical force, not temperature. Guos lab had been mainly doing experiments using optical tweezers, which can use the force of a laser, for example, to manipulate microscopic objects. That force, however, can damage cells.So we developed in the lab direct imaging to look at the movements of particles, he says. This helps with the understanding of the non-equilibrium nature, and we can translate this movement.Guo likens this to the final touches on your morning coffee. The stirring of the spoon for the sugar is causing movement but so is the temperature. In this case, the researchers want to figure out the equivalent of the spoons role in the movement.To do so, the researchers used a modified version of Stokes-Einstein to find the cells stiffness and, by filming the cell and watching each frame, they could separate the influence of temperature on the movement and focus on the physical forces. That eliminates the need to use optical tweezers and prevents the cells from being harmed.The method needs further testing before its introduced to real-life medical scenarios, but Guo is optimistic.Doctors want to be confident enough in this that it can truly be a supplement, he says, adding that the team also wants to use the method to monitor the ongoing health of cancer patients.
